Come se dice "bummer, dude"?

So I have been really freaking excited about my trip to Sicily with DS in June. It was for work (archaeology stuff), but it was going to be fantastic.

That was until our work permits got hung up at the highest level of Sicilian archaeological bureaucracy. After long & frequent emails with the director of the project, DS decided that this was not our year. Had we already been in Sicily, maybe we could have greased some palms to get the permit. Maybe I could have worn a low-cut top & brought pastries to the archaeological superintendent (hey, it worked a few years ago for me on another project!).

Next year, I guess.

But we planned out the remainder of our summer: Portugal (I will do archaeology stuff, DS will drink port), the Veneto [Italy] to see my family, the Dolomites for hiking, and then to Rome where some high school has seen fit to hire DS and me to teach kids archaeology & ancient culture.

So yeah…not too shabby. Hard to mourn the loss of Sicily when we’ve got that itinerary.

Since I will be moving to Winnipeg soon after we return, this will be the opportunity for me to soak up as much emotional (from DS) and actual (from the Mediterranean sun) warmth to pack up with me to Canada.
